2/23/12-Assist To Hamburg At High School

Author: Kellen Klee
On February 23rd, companies 61(Hamburg) and 77(Port Clinton) were dispatched to the Hamburg Area High School on Windsor St. in Hamburg Borough for an automatic fire alarm. Chief 61 arrived first and reported a working fire and the assignment was upgraded adding companies 40(Shoemakersville), 33, 41(Shartlesville), 50(Strausstown), and 545(Hamburg EMS). Ladder 33 arrived and laddered side A(front) of the building and Engine 33 stood by at the hydrant. Crews assisted 61 units on scene for about three and a half hours. The fire was held in the science room were it originated. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes. The cause of the fire was determined to be a chemical reaction between chemicals in a cardboard box in the room. 3 school custodians and 3 firefighters were transported from the scene to the hospital for evaluation due to contact with the chemicals involved.
