11/22/11-Fatal Two Alarm Fire In Tilden Township

Author: Kellen Klee
On Tuesday November 22nd at 19:31 hours, company 33 was dispatched to assist company 61(Hamburg) on a structure fire in the 300 block of Clayton Ave. in Tilden Township. Crews were at station for regular weekly training and got the Ladder, Engine, and Tanker on the road soon after dispatch. Responding units were advised by Berks County Communications Center that PSP(Pennsylvania State Police) was reporting a house fire with fire in the basement and possible entrapment. 61 units began arriving shortly thereafter and confirmed a working fire with entrapment and requested the second alarm and zone two tanker task force. Upon company 33's arrival heavy fire was also in the roof of the one story ranch house. Crews switched to a defensive attack shortly after and soon knocked down all the visable fire in the roof. Crews on scene remained on location for a few hours to overhaul the structure before taking up and going home. Unfortunately one victim was pulled from the house during the fire. Two firefighters were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
