10/23/11-Busy Day For Station 33

Author: Kellen Klee

On October 23rd, company 33 was kept busy throughout the day with seven calls. The first call came in at around 08:03 hours. Companies 46(Kutztown), 35(Lyons), 21(Topton), 33, and 590(Kutztown EMS) were dispatched to the Poplar House on the Kutztown University Campus in Maxatawny Township for a structure fire. Responding units were advised that a Kutztown University police officer was on location reporting heavy smoke in the basement. Ladder and Engine 33 responded to the scene and the crew from the ladder assisted with checking the interior of the building. Crews found an oil burner malfunction and cleared the scene after metering and ventilating the structure. Just after clearing the Poplar House a fire alarm came in at 08:40 hours for a student apartment building on Noble St. in Kutztown Borough. Ladder and Engine 33 along with Engine 35 and Brush 46 responded to the call to cover for the remainder of company 46 still at the Poplar House. The crew from Ladder 33 checked the interior of the building and found a pull station on the third floor pulled maliciously and no fire. Crews cleared the alarm and then proceeded to the Maidencreek in Perry Township to assist companies 40(Shoemakersville) and 61(Hamburg) with a search for evidence for the Pennsylvania State Police. While at the search, Rescue 33 was dispatched to three QRS(Quick Response Service) calls covering for both 61 and 40. Shortly after returning from the search and QRS calls, company 33 was dispatched at 14:54 hours to standby at station for a mountain rescue at Hawk Mountain in Albany Township. Company 33 was not needed at the scene and was released by company 44(Kempton) after they cleared the call.
